This report concerns the market for rigid and articulated dump trucks in Germany, and is an update of the European Service report published in 2017.

The analysis and information contained within the report covers the market for both rigid and articulated dump trucks, since the applications and end-user requirements for either product differ widely. The market for specialist tunnel dump trucks does not constitute part of this study.

The study does not consider the demand for on-off highway trucks, which continue to be very popular in Germany and where there are numerous strong domestic suppliers. This product is an attractive alternative to the articulated dump truck because of its lower purchase price, but the legal requirements governing its use differentiate the product totally from the off-highway dump truck studied in this report.

This report classifies dump trucks by their payload in metric tonnes. The articulated dump truck is of European design and manufacture and has therefore always been classified in tonnes. The design and concept of the rigid dump truck, however, is of American origin. Consequently, the capacity of such machines was originally designated in US tons, or short tons. This report follows the European practice in using the metric tonne, which equals approximately 1.1 short tons.

The findings in this report are based on Off-Highway Research’s International Database and on information obtained in an interview programme with all leading suppliers in September 2020.
