• Chinese Equipment Analysis: Crawler Dozers

This report analyses the Chinese crawler dozer market over the last five years, and is an update of the subject last covered in Off-Highway Research's Chinese Service in June 2023. The findings presented here are based on Off-Highway Research's Chinese Database Service and interviews conducted in China with the industry's leading manufacturers and their distributors during the first quarter of 2025.

Crawler dozers operating in China range from the smallest 80 horsepower models to machines up to 960 horsepower, and are classified into three drive types: mechanical, hydrodynamic (or hydraulic torque converter) and hydrostatic. The mechanically driven machines are only preferred by some traditional customers and demand for them is now relatively low. The hydrodynamic models are currently the most popular with manufacturers and customers and dominate demand. Hydrostatic crawler dozers have been widely accepted by the market and the product range has been extended from 100 horsepower to 775 horsepower.

In 2023, all diesel-powered crawler dozers in the domestic market were upgraded from China Stage III to China Stage IV in accordance with the country’s emissions regulations. It should be noted that crawler dozers for export are mainly powered by diesel engines that meet China Stage II emissions standards, as these machines are destined for regions outside the North American and European markets. Meanwhile, market leader Shantui has developed a range of electric crawler dozers powered by lithium-ion batteries.
