• European Company Profile: Argo Tractors

This is an update of the profile in the European Service of Off-Highway Research of Argo Tractors, published in January 2011. Argo Tractors is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Argo Group, which is the holding company of the Morra family, a company that has steadily acquired farm machinery businesses of ever greater size since its inception in 1994. It came to international prominence by buying Landini tractors in the mid-1990s, then acquiring certain assets in 2001 to create the new, and in some ways not so new, tractor brand of McCormick.

The company expanded its presence in Europe dramatically at the end of the 2000s but in late 2010 it sold its remaining shares in the Laverda and Fella harvesting machinery businesses. This was part of a decision taken by the company to focus exclusively on tractor production. The past decade then saw a process of internationalisation, in part at least in response to the impact on European markets of the financial crisis. Production remains almost exclusively in its domestic Italian market, but sales operations have expanded around the globe and the company also plans to tap into the major markets in which it has not previously been present – Russia, India and China.
