• European Company Profile: CNH Industrial

This report, as part of the European Service, analyses the worldwide activities and performance of the CNH Industrial agricultural and construction machinery divisions, with an emphasis on production, sales and distribution of construction equipment and agricultural tractors in Western Europe. It must be stressed, however, that its European activities form only one area of interest. CNH Industrial operates on a global basis and is present in approximately 190 countries worldwide.

Information in this profile is based on CNH Industrial’s published material and on interviews with CNH Industrial management carried out by Off-Highway Research in 2022 and early 2023.

At the time of the previous report, CNH Industrial had five business segments:

• Agricultural Equipment
• Construction Equipment
• Commercial Vehicles
• Powertrain
• Services

This situation has now changed fundamentally following the decision in 2019 to split the ‘Off-Highway’ and ‘On-Highway’ divisions of the company into two separate businesses. According to the company at the time one of the main reasons for the split was the ‘diverging regulatory and customer requirements’ of the two sectors. Specifically for the construction businesses, the company said its aims would be to improve profitability, simplify the product range and gain market shares in ‘application-specific segments’.

The split was finally approved by CNH industrial shareholders at a meeting on December 23rd 2021. The deed of de-merger was then published on December 31st prior to the two divisions starting trading as separate entities as soon as capital markets re-opened on January 3rd 2022.

The residual company still known as CNH Industrial has therefore become focused on two off-highway business sectors, namely agricultural and construction machinery. This new ‘Off-Highway’ part of the business has retained a similar structure to its predecessor. It has a legal headquarters in Amsterdam along with a financial headquarters in London.

Notwithstanding these changes, CNH Industrial remains a leading global manufacturer of agricultural tractors and combine harvesters, is a global producer of construction equipment and has one of the industry’s largest equipment finance operations. As of December 31, 2022, CNH Industrial had 40,070 employees: 15,052 in Europe; 11,769 in North America; 8,420 in Latin America; and 4,829 in the Rest of the World.

CNH Industrial agricultural products are mainly sold in Europe under the brand names of Case IH, New Holland and Steyr. Construction equipment is sold in Europe under the brand names of Case, New Holland Construction (via the agricultural distribution network) and Eurocomach.

The on-highway business portion is now a completely separate entity known as the Iveco Group and consists of the Iveco trucks, Iveco bus and Heuliez bus brands as well as the FPT Powertrain engine business.
