• European Country Analysis: Greece

The aim of this report is to give a concise picture of the development of the Greek market for various types of construction equipment and agricultural tractors from 2019 to 2023, with forecasts to 2028. It is an update of the issue last published in December 2015.

At the time of the last report Greece, had become notorious for its debt crisis, and the story of the previous five years was of a titanic drama of financial and political turmoil that then obviously affected the construction equipment and farm machinery businesses extremely severely. In this context the past nine years have been relatively calm, with a sustained period in the Doldrums followed by a strong economic recovery, albeit still trying to recoup ground lost previously and notwithstanding the profound impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It is based on field research conducted in October 2024. The sales data is based on interviews conducted with all leading suppliers.

Agricultural tractor data is derived from the Machinery Dealers Importers Association (SEAM) which itself comes directly from distributors of these machines; it is widely considered considerably more accurate that official registrations. Unfortunately, there is no such exchange of sales statistics between suppliers of construction equipment, and statistics are based on interviews only.

Another challenge is that the market for new machines is traditionally overshadowed by large volumes of used construction equipment being employed. Estimates of its relevance vary from an inexact “ten old machines for every new one” to more precise estimates based on the logic of supply and the evidence of the sales network. The official dealers sense it when they try to make sales of new plant, or else take orders for spare parts for machines imported from Western Europe but that have not been sold as original equipment by the normal official distributors.

Each product analysis therefore includes a description of the importance of the used construction equipment market as it is today, since one has to recognise that a fouror five-year old construction machine has been seen as a perfectly logical alternative to a new machine.

It should be added that used equipment sales have generally followed the same pattern as those for new machinery, having collapsed in the early 2010s before a slow and then more sustained recovery.

The report concludes with profiles of leading distributors of construction and agricultural equipment.
