This is the second report published by Off-Highway Research covering the global market for electrically powered construction equipment. The report focuses on machine types which have historically been powered by diesel engines and aims to map the industry’s decarbonisation journey.
It does not cover equipment types which have historically been electrified, such as certain types of access platform and hand-held or hand-guided tools. The coverage is limited to Off-Highway Research’s traditional product focus in the compact, earthmoving, roadbuilding and lifting segments of the off-highway equipment industry. It does not cover other types of equipment which are being electrified, but which are outside Off-Highway Research’s normal coverage, such as site dumpers and walk-behind equipment.
The fact that the decarbonisation of the industry is in its very early years presents some challenges with methodology, particularly in quantifying sales and forecasting. Wherever possible, sales quantities in this report represent commercially available machines in series production, which have been purchased by customers. It does not include prototype machines or pre-production iterations of equipment which may be on trial with customers and users. Off-Highway Research is aware that other types of electric equipment besides those covered in this report are available in some markets, but believes that these are either in the pre-production phase or are sold in very low numbers.
The types of electric equipment covered by this report are predominantly batteryelectric machines, but coverage also includes tethered electric equipment. Hybrid machines which still include a diesel combustion engine are not included.
As time goes on, Off-Highway Research intends to widen the scope of its coverage and reports to include other non-traditional, low carbon energy sources such as hydrogen combustion and hydrogen fuel cells. However, as such machines are not yet commercially available, they do not fall under the scope of this study.
