• European Equipment Analysis: Mini Excavators - UK

This report examines the market for mini excavators capable of 360-degree rotation. These machines may be mounted on either wheels or tracks, although the overwhelming majority are fitted with rubber tracks, while some models are also available with steel tracks, typically for more demanding applications. According to the classifications used by Off-Highway Research, mini excavators fall within an operating weight range of 0.8 to 6.0 tonnes.

While there are many manufacturers and models available in this sector, there are only two models of wheeled mini excavators: the Develon DX57W-7 and the Volvo EW60E.

It is important to note that the definition of what constitutes a mini excavator is becoming increasingly unclear. Some manufacturers now refer to all models under one tonne as micro excavators, although certain models in this category exceed 1.2 tonnes once attachments are added. Meanwhile, other manufacturers define midi excavators as those weighing between 6 and 10 tonnes, although both the upper and lower limits vary across different brands. Furthermore, some manufacturers now use the term ‘compact excavators’ to describe all machines under ten tonnes. This lack of consistency in classification has a significant impact on reported market volumes, with total annual sales varying by as much as 2,000 units depending on how machines are categorised. For the purposes of this report, Off-Highway Research adheres strictly to its established definition of mini excavators as those weighing between 0.8 and 6.0 tonnes.

Although the United Kingdom can lay claim to having developed one of the earliest versions of the mini excavator, thanks to Smalley Excavators in the 1960s, the form of machine commonly recognised today as a mini excavator was largely derived from Japanese designs. These began to appear in Europe in the late 1970s, and their sale have since grown to become the largest segment of the construction equipment industry in the country.

The findings presented in this report are based on Off-Highway Research’s existing database, complemented by an extensive programme of interviews conducted during June and July 2025. These interviews included the single domestic manufacturer active in the UK market, as well as all the leading importers and distributors. This report is an update of the previous study released by Off-Highway Research in December 2020
