This is the second report published by Off-Highway Research to focus exclusively on the UK wheeled excavator market. It covers machines capable of 360-degree rotation, mounted on wheels, and ranging in size from 6 tonnes to more than 30 tonnes. Mini excavators under 6 tonnes are excluded, as they are dealt with separately within the European Service. Wheeled excavators in the 6–10 tonne class, often referred to as ‘midi’ machines, are included in this study.

The findings are drawn from Off-Highway Research’s proprietary database and an interview programme conducted during June to August 2025. Discussions were held with the only domestic manufacturer as well as the leading importers, providing a comprehensive overview of current market dynamics.

The UK wheeled excavator market is one of the most competitive in Europe, with 18 suppliers operate in what is, by volume, a small sector. While the hydraulic excavator market as a whole has experienced significant volatility over the years, the wheeled segment has generally been more stable than the crawler market. Nonetheless, shifts in economic conditions have had a marked effect on manufacturers and dealers alike.

This report examines these trends, outlines the challenges and opportunities currently shaping the market, and assesses the likely trajectory over the next five years. It also considers the strategic implications for the companies competing in this increasingly contested sector
